The Admissions Process

  • Having made the decision that you wish your child to be considered for admission to St. Bees and undertake the relevant entrance procedures the first step is to complete a Registration Form.  The form can be found at the back of the prospectus or downloaded here.
  • The completed Registration Form should then be returned to the Registrar, Jane Hawley along with a cheque for the £40 registration fee (this fee covers the cost of administering the entrance exam) and a copy of your child’s birth certificate.

  • You are not committing at this stage! In accepting the Registration Form, the School is not obliged to offer a place, nor is the parent/guardian obliged to accept a place that is offered.
  • As a consequence of your Registration you will be invited to future functions and events and you will receive copies of School Newsletters and information.

  • You will be welcome at any time to ring Jane Hawley and book an appointment to take a personal tour of the School and meet the Headmaster, Mr. Philip Capes.  You will also be very welcome to come and see the Bursar, Mr. Gordon Stokes if you require any financial advice.
  • For entry into the Preparatory Department pupils may enter at any stage of their Key Stage 1 education - Reception and Years 1&2 and Key Stage 2 education – Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Places are offered following the outcome of an interview with Mr. Sewill, the Lead Prep Teacher.  Academic reports and references will be obtained from previous schools.

  • The 11+ and 13+ Scholarship examinations for entry in September 2011 are due to be held on Saturday 12th February 2011. Registered parents receive automatic notification of the dates and detailed instructions closer to the time and music scholarships on 14th February 2011.
  • The School does not supply copies of past examination papers but we can provide a brief sample question sheet upon request.

  • At 16+, pupils entering the Sixth form are required to have passed five GCSE subjects, at C grade or higher.  Interviews take place with the Headmaster, Deputy Head and the Heads of the appropriate academic departments. A satisfactory school report is also required.
  • The outcome of entrance and scholarship papers is communicated in writing to parents within two weeks of the last paper being taken.  The letters sent out offering places include details of any scholarships or other awards. Parents are asked to accept the offer and pay the acceptance deposit or decline the offer within two weeks so that the place or award can be offered to another family if necessary.

  • Following receipt of the acceptance form and acceptance fee further joining documentation is sent out such as medical forms, transport proformas and requirement for music or golf lessons.  New pupils will be allocated Houses and Sporting Divisions and Houseparents will make first contact.  Our aim is to make your child’s transition into St. Bees as smooth as possible!
