St. Bees School Learning Support Unit

Learning Support

‘LSU has helped me by making fun ways of improving my spelling and writing. It helps me with my organisational skills.’ (3rd year student)

The Learning Support Department at St Bees School (CReSTeD registered) aims to provide individually tailored one to one support for pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties. Students are given extra tuition in Literacy and Numeracy by highly experienced and qualified teaching staff. The Unit assists pupils to access the curriculum while ensuring their specific needs are met.

Learning SupportStudents are assessed by the Unit either prior to, or immediately after starting at St Bees. Following this assessment an appropriate teaching programme is implemented with each pupil’s strengths and weaknesses taken into account. The Unit prides itself in providing excellent support both academically and pastorally.

Access Arrangements are organised by the Unit and the school’s Educational Psychologist for students at GCSE, AS and A2 level, these include: extra time, word processing, scribe, reader and rest breaks. During internal examinations students receive extra support with revision strategies and are provided with additional help as required.
