We see involvement in Sports, at whatever standard, as an important part of pupils' educational experiences. Pupils can learn a great deal about leadership, team building, personal fitness and health through their involvement in the School's games programme. It can also develop within them a sense of fair play and the ability to cope with success and failure in a competitive environment. We aim for pupils in Prep. 2 and 3 to have a games session at least four times a week and quite often they participate a games lesson every day of the week. The emphasis is on enjoyment, fair play, fitness and acquiring new skills. We are fortunate to enjoy the Senior School sporting facilities. These include a large multi-purpose sports hall, an indoor swimming pool, as well as hockey and rugby pitches. Sport is taught by Form Teachers and Senior School sports specialists and includes all major sports. Throughout the year, older pupils have the opportunity to play in team matches which take place during the week and sometimes on Saturdays. Children need to keep the correct games kit in School every day of the week. Items of kit are detailed in the School uniform list.
Games lessons during the year focus on: Hockey, netball, football and rugby in the Autumn and Spring Terms and rounders, tennis, cricket and athletics in the Summer Term.
Pupils who are medically unfit for games or swimming should bring a note into School for their Form Teacher.
Golf
The School’s Golf Academy, run by a resident PGA professional, is enjoyed and valued by the students in the Prep. Department through weekly lessons. St. Bees’ pupils have excellent golfing facilities at their disposal. To find out more follow this link: http://www.st-bees-school.org/golfacademy/golfacademy.htm.
Swimming
We aim for all the children in the Prep. Department to have one swimming lesson a week and also to have the opportunity to swim as an after-school activity. All children will need to ensure that they have the correct kit for swimming in School (See uniform list). The pool is also open to members of the public at specified times.

From Monday to Thursday, there are four time-tabled activity and club periods from 4.00pm to 4.30pm and further activities from 4:30pm to 5:00pm for all Prep. classes. These give the children the opportunity to develop skills and interests beyond the classroom. The activities are voluntary, but children are encouraged to attend and include dance, board games, model club and cricket. Other sports and outdoor activities will take place in the warmer weather. All activities are offered free of charge and the children are given a snack and a drink before they start the sessions.
